Data Science at NCI

National College of Ireland (NCI) has developed Data Bytes, a Transition Year programme that helps students understand Data Science, starting with the basics.

National College of Ireland (NCI), home to the largest School of Computing in Ireland, is an education leader in Data Science and over the years, has developed a suite of courses to address the growing demand for data scientists.

Meeting the Needs of the Workforce

NCI first began teaching Data Science in 2013 with the introduction of a Higher Diploma in Data Analytics. Identified by the Government as an area in need of qualified professionals, this course was offered through the Springboard+ Initiative. It allowed current IT professionals to specialise and gave people from the business sector a pathway to a career in data science. This was followed with the development of a level 9 MSc in Data Analytics.

These courses are highly relevant to industry and lead to rewarding jobs in the sector. 96% of NCI's Higher Diploma in Data Analytics class of 2021, were in employment within 3 months of completing their course, taking up roles with Facebook, Electric Ireland, TikTok, and Zurich Life among others.

Bringing Data Science to the CAO

In 2014, NCI began offering data analytics as a specialisation on the School of Computing’s leading BSc Honours in Computing degree.

Most recently, in 2019, NCI launched a full suite of undergraduate Data Science programmes aimed at CAO applicants: the level 8 BSc. (Hons) in Data Science and the level 6 Higher Certificate in Data Science.

NCI has pedagogic expertise in introducing Higher Education concepts into the Secondary Education environment, and many years' experience working directly with TY and 5th Year Students. Data Bytes will allow TY students to learn from expert faculty about this rapidly growing industry.
